7 Things to Know Before Taking Beginner Salsa Classes in DC & Bethesda
What to Know Before Taking Beginner Salsa Classes
1. You Don’t Need Previous Dance Experience
2. You Don’t Need a Partner for Beginner Salsa Classes
One of the biggest questions we hear is: Do I need to bring someone with me?
No!
You can absolutely come to beginner salsa classes on your own.
Partner rotation is part of many group dance classes, giving students the opportunity to practice with different people while learning how to lead, follow, and adapt to different dance partners.
Of course, if you want to come with a friend or partner, you can do that too.
3. Wear Something Comfortable
You don’t need a special salsa outfit for your first class.
Choose clothing that lets you move comfortably and makes you feel confident. Since you’ll be moving throughout the class, breathable and flexible clothing usually works best.
For shoes, look for something comfortable that stays securely on your feet and allows you to move easily.
And don’t worry about dressing like a professional dancer. Your first class is about learning and having fun.
4. Your First Class Is About the Basics
You probably won’t be doing complicated spins and combinations during your first class, and that’s a good thing.
Good beginner salsa classes focus first on building a solid foundation.
You may work on basic steps, weight changes, timing, rhythm, simple turns, and introductory partnerwork.
These basics might look simple, but they are what everything else in salsa builds on later.
Give yourself permission to learn at your own pace instead of trying to get every step perfect immediately.
5. Consistency Makes a Big Difference
Like learning any new skill, salsa becomes easier with practice.
That’s why Salsa With Silvia offers 4-week class series where students can build on what they learned the previous week instead of starting over each time.
Coming consistently gives your body time to become familiar with the movements, while helping you feel more comfortable with the music and with dancing with a partner.
You may be surprised by how different your dancing feels after just a few weeks of regular practice.
6. Salsa Can Be Social, Not Just a Workout
Learning the steps is only one part of salsa.
Social dancing gives you the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned, meet other dancers, listen to different salsa music, and become more comfortable dancing outside of a class setting.
At Salsa With Silvia, students can also practice their skills through social dance parties, workshops, and other dance events in DC and Bethesda.
You don’t need to wait until you’re an advanced dancer either. Social dancing is part of the learning experience. Check our upcoming social parties and workshops here
